A MARC bibliographic record consists of three main components: the Leader, the Directory, and the variable fields. The following information summarizes the structure of a separate MARC record. There are three main sections of a MARC Record: Leader: This is the shortest section in a MARC record. It consists of 24 sequential symbols or characters. Individual symbols or groups of symbols show different types of data in the record. This is the first part of the record. Common MARC bibliographic fields and subfields for monographs
Biographical information about an individual or historical information about an institution or event used as the main entry for the item being cataloged. When a distinction between levels of detail is required, a brief summary is given in subfield $a and a fuller annotation is given in subfield $b. Type of data in the field.
